One of the hottest Do-It-Yourself trends, Anders Ruff Workshop, will open at The Village of Rochester Hills on March 22. The hands-on workshop is set in a boutique studio offering step-by-step instruction for learning unique skills and creating charming home decor pieces. Jennifer Perino and Jen Amin have owned the Northville AR Workshop since August of 2016. The duo was interested in adding a second location when customer Kimberly Battani approached them about partnering for a Rochester Hills site. In addition to being a fan of AR Workshop, Battani already had experience with sign production so the fit was a natural. The trio’s Grand Opening in Rochester Hills will include an Open House.

“We’ve already had so many requests to schedule parties,” Perino said. The workshop is popular for corporate events, Girls Nights Out, kid parties and church groups. Private parties can be booked with a room rental fee of $75 for a minimum group size of 12 on weekdays and 17 on weekends. Group reservations can also be made with a refundable deposit. Individuals can also book a seat on-line. Attendees are allowed to bring their own snacks.

The wood plank sign is the most popular item, according to Perino. Kid parties can select from three options: a pillow, small canvas or quote board. “Guys like it too!” Perino said. “It makes a fun date night.” Perino said they see a lot of repeat business at the Northville location with customers coming back to make signs for each holiday. The workshop, located at 256 N. Adams, will also have some retail items for purchase.

Revel Bros to open in mid-March

ROCHESTER HILLS, MI (Feb. 27, 2017) - Everyone knows what a Belgian waffle is, but have you ever heard of a Liege wafel?

Called “one of life’s great indulgences,” the Liege wafel is made with a brioche-dough base (think rich and buttery) that takes 14 hours - including rising time - to make. Pearl sugar is then mashed into the raised dough and when the dough meets the hot waffle iron, it liquefies on the inside of the pastry and caramelizes on the outside.

Josh Charlip was already scouting out the Village of Rochester Hills as a second location for his Cool Jacks ice cream parlor when a silent partner-- and expert Liege wafel maker-- sweetened the deal.IMG 9456

Sharing a common love for artisan desserts made only from the finest ingredients, the partners joined together to open Revel Brothers: Ice Cream & Wafels.

Revel Bros, located at 254 N. Adams in The Village, will open in mid-March. The ice cream shop will serve homemade Cool Jacks ice cream, Cool Jacks cookies and, of course, Liege wafels.  The wafel toppings will vary but may include fresh fruit, whipped cream, Nutella and Cool Jacks ice cream. Cool Jacks ice cream is all natural and organic with dairy sourced from western Michigan. Menu items will range from $4- $8. The modern yet warm shop--with navy blue walls, natural plywood, pipes and copper-- will seat 15-20 with counter service.

The partners are excited to add to the premium experience of “The Village” with a unique and complementary dessert experience like no other found in Michigan.

Valentine's Day hasn't always been hearts and roses. Over time it's been many things-- and why not?

It's been around for centuries, starting as an ancient pagan celebration of fertility until the 5th century when Pope Gelasius took over the date to honor Saint Valentine, a priest beheaded in 270 AD for performing Christian marriages.

Even then, the day was not associated with romance until the Middle Ages when poet Geoffry Chaucer linked the day with love in his poem "Parlement of Foules."

For this was on Saint Valentine's day,

When every fowl comes there his mate to take.

A society obsessed with chivalry and courtly love took this image to heart and the holiday took flight.

The oldest known valentine was written in 1415 by Charles, Duke of Orleans, to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London. His jailer, King Henry V, must have been impressed because he hired his own writer to compose valentines. And from there the holiday just kept growing.

From the handwritten notes friends and lovers exchanged in the 18th century, to the masses of printed cards that are swapped today, Valentine's Day comes second only to Christmas for the number of cards sent. According to the Greeting Card Association, an estimated 1 billion Valentine's Day cards will be sent this year. That, my friends, is a lot of love. And who doesn't love love?

But here at The Village we want to share the love beyond cards and chocolates (although those are very nice). We want to see how you spread love and kindness out to the world. Simply post a photo and description of the way you have used the holiday to bring some love and light into the world on the Village Facebook contest page. Some lucky participants will win a $50 Village gift card as our thanks for making the world a better place.

Did you donate a trunkful of clothes?

Pay in forward in the Starbucks line?

Shovel your neighbors driveway?

Volunteer in the soup kitchen?

Show us your big hearts, Rochester Hills, and win!
